Today, The Public Accounts Committee (PAC) has highlighted the Home Office’s failings in analysing skilled worker migrant exit checks. The skilled worker route was introduced in 2020 and an estimated 1.18 million have applied for entry clearance to the UK.

Following the Government’s crackdown on net migration and the decision to end overseas recruitment of care workers, there are now plans underway to put in place an effective tool to accurately monitor entry and exit from the UK.

Biometric testing in workplaces is being considered alongside facial recognition tools.

However, whilst these plans are a work in progress, there has been a surge in enforcement action across the country, UK food delivery firms have pledged their commitment to increase the use of facial verification check for their riders to ensure only those with registered accounts can work for their business.

In addition, hospitality venues, construction sites and care homes are being targeted by enforcement teams, and these officers are walking away with record numbers of arrests – a staggering 51% rise in the number of arrests since the election.

The crackdown will ensure the Government meets its target to reduce net migration but also protects those workers from being exploited.

Unfortunately, there are employers who use the vulnerability of these individuals to their advantage, yet the majority are wishing to offer support to those in need of employment.

As an employer, the best thing you can do is ensure that you are compliant in the handling of your sponsor duties. Obtain a sponsor licence – remember this is a privilege and not a right, keep full records of all employees – regardless of nationality, and regularly check in with your sponsored workforce to obtain up to date information and details – the onus remains on the employee to update UKVI of any changes.

Illegal working doesn’t benefit anyone in the long term – as a business you risk reputational damage, and your employees are unlikely to remain loyal to an untrustworthy employer.
